The nation's first secretary of war was Gen. Henry Knox, of Thomaston.


The first limestone quarry in Maine was opened in the coastal town of Thomaston, formerly the home of the Maine State Prison.


The first prisoners were jailed in the Maine State Prison in 1824, when Thomaston opened.
