From lime rock. Rockland was the major lime producing city on the east coast for well over a century. The lime was quarried from a rich vein of lime rock back of the, burned in kilns along the waterfront and shipped by by schooners, and barges to New York, Boston and other east and gulf coast cities for mortar,and other industrial purposes, as well as crushed,unburned lime rock for agricultural use.
