Nathaniel Hawthorne was drifting in a skiff on Sebago Lake as he wrote the first words of his novel The Scarlet Letter.
Legend has it that the local indian tribe, of Sebago Lake, Maine used to sit on the hill at the end of Messelman Drive and in the spring they would watch the ice go out of the bay. Translated from their language to English "see the bay go" thus Sebago Lake. - Elizbeth A. Field
