What is special about Oakland, Maine?

Oakland is a small town with solid hometown values. It is located on the edge of one of Maine's cities (Waterville) but also next to some of the prettiest lakes the Northeast has to offer.

How would you describe Oakland, Maine?

Laid back for the most part, but nightlife is just down the road in Waterville if you are looking for a little more excitement.

What is the most fun thing to do in Oakland, Maine?

For me personally, it is to participate and watch the many youth athletic teams compete, especially softball.

Where is the best entertainment in Oakland, Maine?

For nightlife, I'd say the local bar "Thirsty Mule" is the hot spot, but the highschool's performing arts center has many performances that are open the public around the year.

Where is the best place to eat in Oakland, Maine?

For hearty comfort food style cooking, nothing beats the Early Bird Restaurant. But if you want something above and beyond then norm, you've got to try Riverside Farm Restaurant and Wine Market. The food there is out of this world.

Where is the best place to stay in Oakland, Maine?

We have but one Bed & Breakfast; the Pressey House. Its a picturesque B&B located right on the shores of Messalonskee Lake.

Messalonskee Lake and Stream. First thing in the morning or last thing at night when the loons are calling each other...nothing like it.

What is the most interesting historical fact or attraction in Oakland, Maine?

Oakland used to be known as the Scythe and Ax capital of the world. Probably because of the abundance of hardwoods (Oak) the handles and heads were made locally for many years.

Commercial Environment in Oakland, Maine?

The town itself has not seen a lot of growth in the past few years commercially, but I believe its role is more of a bedroom community for neighboring Waterville and Augusta.

Political Environment in Oakland, Maine?

Typical New England Town hall style government and meetings.

Educational Facilities in Oakland, Maine?

Messalonskee High School has always been a top ranked High School in Maine academically. Three colleges are located nearby: Colby College, Thomas College and Kennebec Valley Community College.

Employment in Oakland, Maine?

Employment opportunities are few due to the diminished growth commercially of the town. There are a few industries in town that do provide some employment.

Healthcare in Oakland, Maine?

Healthcare coverage is good, we have a few small clinics here in town, but the majority of healthcare is provided by Maine General in Waterville.

What else about Oakland, Maine?

I grew up here and left for the military after high school. I've seen a lot of the world, but chose to come home. What else can I say? I love it here.
